“You volunteered.” Every veteran has heard it. Usually right after complaining about the war, the barracks, the VA, the injuries, the orders, or the bend over and spread 'em memory. Fair enough, nobody dragged us into the recruiter’s office. But when does volunteering end? Right after you sign the dotted line... 😂 You can volunteer for a civilian job, realize the boss lied, the work is nothing like they promised, and walk out. The military laughs at that freedom. Once the contract takes effect, walking away is no longer quitting. It becomes AWOL/UA and prison quickly enters the picture. In wartime, desertion can legally carry the death penalty. I distinctly remember one Marine going UA (unauthorized Absence) who had a death before dishonor tattoo on his arm. When he eventually returned, we reminded him of it often. Then there’s your own body. Every Marine heard some version of the same thing, get sunburned bad enough that you can’t hump a pack and you've “damaged government property.” That is not literally what Article 108 says, but the joke worked because everyone understood the culture. Your location, appearance, medical readiness, labor and physical condition were now subject to somebody else’s authority. So what exactly did we volunteer for? You voluntarily signed a contract surrendering certain freedoms for a fixed period, knowing the institution cannot function if Marines can quit halfway through a deployment. It's the ultimate blind commitment that can cost your life. But there’s another way to look at it. Consent normally means you can withdraw it. If a recruiter sold you one reality, you discovered another, and the penalty for leaving became confinement, how voluntary is it? If they can lie to get you in the door and then hold you to the contract, who is the dishonorable one? We've all heard "my recruiter lied to me" more times than we can count. How much coercion can exist inside something before we stop calling it voluntary? I thought about this every time I heard the old retort, "you volunteered for it" when shit got bad. But something about it always felt wrong. 🤔
